West Coast Swing: Choosing the Right Shoes for This Booming Dance

For West Coast Swing, choose a low-heeled shoe (a flat with about a 5 cm heel), with good support around the foot and a suede sole that glides just enough for pivots and glides without compromising your anchor. A low-heeled ballroom shoe or a smooth-soled dance sneaker are both suitable, provided you never dance in sneakers with rubber soles.

What West Coast Swing demands from your feet

West Coast Swing (WCS) descends from Lindy Hop. It developed in California starting in the late 1940s, took on its current name around the 1960s, and was later designated the official state dance of California in 1988. It is danced to a wide variety of 4/4 music: blues, soul, contemporary pop, and slow or fast tracks.

Its signature is the slot: a narrow, imaginary lane on the dance floor. The follower moves from one end of this line to the other, while the leader moves very little and steps aside to let her pass.

  • Glides: many movements involve gliding the foot across the floor rather than lifting it. A sole with too much grip will hinder this.
  • The anchor step: most figures end with a beat where you step back and resist your partner. You need a sole that holds at this moment, otherwise your foot will slip.
  • The sugar push: a basic six-count figure consisting of compression followed by momentum. You need firm support on the ball of the foot and a stable heel.
  • Pivots and whips: the eight-count whip turns the follower back into the slot. The rotation occurs through the ball of the foot, which is why a sole that turns without resistance is beneficial.

WCS therefore requires a fine balance between glide and grip, and the sole is what determines it.

The sole: suede or smooth leather

On parquet or a dance studio floor, suede remains the safest choice. Its fibers grip the floor slightly during the anchor step, then allow the foot to glide during glides and turns. A quick brushing is enough to restore its grip. To understand in detail why suede works, read our guide on suede soles for dance shoes.

Smooth leather glides more. Some dancers prefer it on matte or slightly sticky floors (multi-purpose rooms, linoleum, old varnished floors), precisely because it compensates for a lack of glide. On polished parquet, it can quickly become too slippery for a beginner.

Dance sneakers often offer a compromise: a smooth sole, sometimes with a pivot zone under the ball of the foot. If you dance at parties in bars or rooms with unknown flooring, this is a practical option. However, avoid regular sneakers or athletic shoes: their rubber grips the floor too much, locking the foot during rotations and tiring the knees and ankles.

Sole Grip Ideal floor For whom
Suede Balanced, adjustable by brushing Parquet, studio floor Beginners and regular dancers
Smooth leather Low, free glide Matte or sticky floors Dancers comfortable with their balance
Smooth-soled dance sneaker Moderate Various rooms, parties Dancers who frequently change venues
Athletic shoe rubber Too strong None for WCS Avoid

What heel height is best for WCS

WCS is danced with your weight well supported, requiring a lot of work with the floor. A high heel moves your center of gravity forward, shortens glides, and makes anchoring unstable. Most female dancers therefore choose between a flat and a heel of about 5 cm.

  • 3 cm flat: for beginners, for long evenings, or if you want to feel the floor as much as possible.
  • 4 to 5 cm: a little more arch and a more elegant leg line, without sacrificing stability. Choose a heel with a fairly wide base.
  • Higher: rarely useful in this dance.

For men, a flat lace-up dance shoe or a dance sneaker is sufficient. Our rock and swing shoes collection features closed-back low-heeled styles for women and men, and our women's low-heeled dance shoes collection includes the styles best suited to this height range.

Support and comfort for long evenings

WCS parties often last several hours. Two criteria matter more than style.

Foot support

The foot must not move inside the shoe during the anchor step. An ankle strap, laces, or a high upper (bootie, sneaker) prevents the heel from slipping out. An open pump without a strap should be avoided for WCS.

Sole flexibility

Bend the shoe: it should flex easily at the ball of the foot. A rigid sole hinders the foot's roll during triple steps and makes glides less precise.

WCS or rock: why not use the same shoe

WCS is often compared to rock because both come from the swing family. However, rock is danced with rotation, with more jumping and faster steps, while WCS remains linear, grounded, and gliding. A rock shoe with a higher heel or more grippy sole can therefore hinder movement in the slot. If you practice both, a suede sole and a low heel remain a good compromise. For rock in particular, see our guide on women's rock shoes.

Adapting your pair to the floors you encounter

WCS is danced in studios, but also in bars or party halls. The floor changes from one evening to the next.

  • Clean parquet: suede is perfect. Brush it before dancing to restore its texture.
  • Too slippery floor: brush the suede more vigorously or dance in a slightly grippier sole.
  • Sticky floor (linoleum, painted tile): a smooth leather sole or a smooth-soled dance sneaker makes pivots easier.
  • Outdoors: never walk outside with suede soles, as they will wear out very quickly. Change your shoes on site.

Many regular dancers end up with two pairs: one in suede and one dance sneaker. The automatic 10% discount when purchasing 2 or more pairs of shoes makes this duo more affordable. You will find styles from both families in our women's ballroom dance shoes and dance sneakers collections.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dance West Coast Swing in sneakers?

Yes, provided they are dance sneakers with a smooth sole or a pivot zone. Athletic or regular sneakers have rubber that grips too much: it locks the foot during rotations and strains the knees. Keep them for going to the party, not for dancing.

What heel height should I choose when starting WCS?

A flat or 3 cm heel is the easiest for learning anchoring and glides. You can move to 4 or 5 cm once you have mastered the basics. Beyond that, the center of gravity moves forward and the dance loses stability.

Is a suede sole mandatory for West Coast Swing?

No, but it is the most versatile sole for parquet. Smooth leather is suitable for sticky floors and dancers comfortable with gliding. What matters is avoiding rubber soles that grip too much.

How do I care for the soles of my WCS shoes?

Brush the suede with a brass brush before and after dancing, and never wear these shoes outside. Let them air dry after a party. Our guide on caring for your dance shoes details every step.
