Dance sneakers: how to choose them
Dance sneakers combine the support of an athletic sneaker with the flexibility of a dance shoe. Ideal for jazz, hip-hop, modern dance, and teaching.
What is a dance sneaker?
A dance sneaker differs from a regular sneaker in the following ways:
- A split sole that allows for footwork
- A circular pivot point under the heel for turns
- Enhanced heel cushioning to absorb impact from jumps
- A lightweight and breathable upper
- A non-marking sole (leaves no marks on dance floors)
What dances are they suitable for?
- Hip-hop, breakdancing, street dance: enhanced support and maximum cushioning
- Jazz: priority on flexibility, with a very supple sole
- Modern / contemporary dance: lightweight or barefoot styles
- Teaching (dance teachers): long-lasting comfort + style
- Fitness / Zumba: cushioning + support + pivot point
Selection criteria
- Size: choose a half size larger to allow for footwork
- Width: most styles fit a medium-width foot. For wide feet, see our dedicated collection.
- Upper: smooth leather or breathable mesh, depending on how much you sweat.
- Laces: choose styles with elastic laces or Velcro for quick fastening.
How do they differ from athletic sneakers?
A regular athletic sneaker has a rigid one-piece sole designed for walking and running. It does not allow for proper footwork and will catch during turns. For dancing, this can be dangerous for your ankles.
