How to choose your Argentine tango shoes
Pivots, ochos, ganchos, boleos: in Argentine tango, every figure relies on precise support and controlled gliding. The right shoe holds your foot, pivots without catching, and lets you dance an entire milonga. Here is how to choose, from your first class to evening dances.

Why a special shoe for tango
A regular shoe grips the floor and blocks pivots. A tango shoe combines three things: a sole that glides on the parquet, straps that prevent the foot from moving in the shoe, and a heel that places the weight forward, as required by tango posture.
1. Heel height
- First classes: 6 to 7 cm. Enough to find the posture without compromising balance.
- Regular dancer: 7 to 8 cm, the most common height at a milonga.
- Experienced dancer: 8 to 9 cm and more, when balance on one foot is solid.
- Men: a low heel of 2.5 to 3.5 cm.
Increase the height gradually: a well-mastered lower heel is better than a high heel that makes you lose your axis.
2. Heel shape: thin or wider
At a milonga, the thin heel dominates: it elongates the leg line and pivots on a small surface. A wider heel is more reassuring for beginners, as it offers more stability. In the abrazo, the heel passes close to the partner's feet: it must remain stable and well-centered under the heel of the foot.
3. Straps and support
The foot must not slide in the shoe during pivots and boleos. Look for an ankle strap and straps on the forefoot. Your toes should not stick out from the sole.
4. Sole: suede or smooth leather
| Sole | For whom | Advantage | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suede | Classes, practices, most parquets | Pivots easily, keeps grip | Must be brushed regularly, never wear outside |
| Smooth leather | Waxed milonga parquets | Very smooth glide | Can be too slippery on an already fast floor |

5. Material and color
Satin is light and elegant, leather and soft materials mold to the foot, patent leather and sequins shine at night. For a first pair, black goes with all outfits; red, gold, or camel come next.
6. For men
A closed and laced shoe, with a low heel, with a dance sole and a flexible forefoot for pivots. Matte or patent black leather remains the great classic.
7. Argentine tango or ballroom tango
These are two different dances. Argentine tango is an improvisational dance practiced at a milonga. Ballroom tango, or standard tango, belongs to competition dances, with a fixed arm position and codified steps. This guide is about Argentine tango. For standard tango, see our ballroom dance shoes.
8. Mistakes to avoid
- Dancing in regular shoes: the sole catches and pivots strain the knees.
- Starting too high: a 9 cm heel without experience makes you lose your axis. Start at 6 or 7 cm.
- Choosing a pair that is too large: the foot slides forward and the toes rub.
- Wearing your tango shoes outside: the sole gets dirty and no longer glides.
- Breaking in a new pair one milonga evening: wear it first in class so it molds to your foot.
9. To last an entire milonga
A milonga often lasts several hours. Keep a second, lower pair in your bag, add a pad under the forefoot if necessary, and choose a soft material for feet that swell at the end of the evening.

Frequently asked questions
What heel height to start tango?
Between 6 and 7 cm. It is the right compromise between tango posture and balance during pivots.
Suede or leather sole for tango?
Suede is suitable for most classes and parquets. Smooth leather glides more, it is appreciated on the waxed parquets of milongas.
Can you dance tango with salsa shoes?
Yes to start, if they have a dance sole and an ankle strap. With practice, a tango shoe offers better support for pivots and ganchos.
What size to choose?
A tango shoe is worn fitted. Measure the length of your foot in centimeters and consult our size guide, or write to us at contact@dansezo.fr.
