Choosing the right pair for a child

• Size: a snug fit, without leaving room to grow into them: a shoe that's too big makes kids trip
• Heel: flat or very low for the youngest dancers
• Material: lightweight canvas that's easy to wash for class

Kids' dance shoes by discipline

• Ballet: ballet slippers and demi-pointe shoes, in canvas or leather depending on the style.
• Modern jazz: flexible jazz shoes, often with a split sole, to work the point of the foot.
• Latin dance: low-heel styles for young dancers just starting salsa or ballroom dancing.

Should you size up for a child?

No. Dance shoes should be worn snug, otherwise the child can't feel the floor and may slip.

At what age should you buy dance shoes for a child?

From the very first introductory classes, often around age 4, with simple slippers. See our kids' dance shoe guide.

How do you measure a child's foot?

Have the child stand with their heel against a wall, on a sheet of paper. Mark the tip of the longest toe, then measure in centimetres. Measure both feet and keep the longer length, preferably at the end of the day.

Ballet slippers or demi-pointes for a beginner?

For the introductory classes and the first years of ballet, a soft slipper is enough. Demi-pointes with a split sole are suitable once the child works more on the point of the foot. The teacher will often specify the style expected.
