How to choose your kizomba shoes

The kizomba is a couple's dance born in Angola, slow and very connected. It involves a lot of walking, gliding, and smoothly shifting weight, often for hours. The right kizomba shoe is therefore first and foremost a comfortable shoe that glides and holds the foot well.

1. Heel height

  • For beginners: 4 to 5 cm. You keep your balance during steps and weight changes.
  • Regular dancer: 5 to 7 cm, for a posture slightly leaning forward.
  • No heel: it's possible, especially for the first classes or in urban kiz. Choose a dance sole then.

A heel that is too high tires quickly on such a long dance. To compare heights, read which comfortable heel to choose.

2. Comfort above all

Kizomba parties last a long time and feet swell at the end of the evening. Favor:

  • a soft material that adapts to the foot (satin, suede or soft synthetic material);
  • an adjustable ankle strap;
  • a well-supported forefoot, without the toes sticking out;
  • a fitted size: neither too tight nor too large.

3. A sole that glides

Kizomba is danced by gliding the feet on the floor. A suede sole glides without slipping and facilitates pivots. It is reserved for the dance floor: on the sidewalk, it wears out and loses its glide. More details in everything you need to know about the suede sole.

4. Open sandal or ankle boot

The strappy sandal remains the most common model. The ankle boot holds the ankle better and is popular in urban kiz. Both are suitable: choose according to your style and comfort.

5. Color

Black and nude or beige tones go with all outfits and elongate the leg line. Bright colors and shiny finishes are perfect for themed parties.

6. For men

A closed low-heeled shoe, with a dance sole. It must be flexible at the forefoot, because the male dancer walks and guides all evening. See our men's dance shoes.

Errors to avoid

  1. Dancing in city sneakers: the rubber sole grips and blocks glides.
  2. Choosing a heel that is too high for a first pair.
  3. Taking a size up "to be comfortable": the foot slips in the shoe and rubs.
  4. Breaking in a new pair one evening at a festival: wear it first in class.
