Competition equipment: which shoes

Are you taking part in your first dance competition? Choosing the right shoes is just as important as your technique when it comes to your results. Here is our guide to help you choose the right footwear.

Competition: national federation rules

For WDSF (world) and national federation competitions, shoes must meet the following requirements:

  • Colour: nude satin/leather for standard ballroom dancing; any colour for Latin
  • Heel height: maximum 10 cm for women, 4 cm Cuban heel for men
  • No visible glitter for standard (allowed for Latin)
  • Suede soles are mandatory

Women: Standard (waltz, tango, foxtrot, quickstep, slow)

  • Closed-toe shoes with a rounded toe
  • 7–8 cm flared heel
  • Silky material or nude satin
  • Ankle strap

Women: Latin (cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso, jive)

  • Open sandals with multiple straps
  • 7.5–9 cm flared or stiletto heel
  • Patent leather, dyeable satin or glitter
  • Any colour (nude, gold, silver or black)

Men: Standard

  • Black nappa or patent leather shoes
  • 2.5–3 cm Cuban heel
  • Traditional laces
  • Suede soles

Men: Latin

  • Black nappa leather shoes
  • 3.5–4 cm Cuban heel
  • Slightly longer shape

Preparing your shoes before a competition

  1. Brush the suede soles to activate the grip
  2. Check the stitching and straps
  3. Do a practice run 48 hours before the competition
  4. Lightly polish patent leather

How many pairs should you take?

At a multi-dance competition, always take 2 pairs of shoes plus a pair of walking shoes. A sole can get wet, or a heel can break. The second pair will save you.
